  • Opera already launched a beta version of the mobile browser with inbuilt cryptocurrency wallet.

According to a press release, Opera web browser, the first to launch a feature that protects the computer from secret mining, is launching a new version of the desktop browser with inbuilt cryptocurrency wallet.

Opera already launched a beta version of Opera web browser for Android with an inbuilt mobile cryptocurrency wallet in July this year. The firm announced that the “strong interest” and an “overwhelmingly positive response from the crypto community” towards the Opera for Android with the mobile cryptocurrency wallet are the driving force for its latest development.

The new Opera desktop browser will enable users to link their existing cryptocurrency wallet mobile app to the Opera desktop browser by scanning a QR code. Opera has been using the QR code system to synchronize desktop-mobile applications for more than a few years, for instance, it uses the QR code with its WhatsApp web client.

By linking the crypto wallet mobile app to the desktop, the wallet can employ the secure system lock on the phone to enable users to authorize transactions through their fingerprints, instead of keying passwords into the browser. The press release noted that this feature is potentially more secure and more efficient. The existing cryptocurrency wallet mobile app remains ‘user-controlled.’ This means that keys are rather stored on the phone and not on a centralized server.

Just like the crypto mobile app, the desktop client will support digital collectibles and tokens. Charles Hamel, the product lead of Opera Crypto, stated that the desktop browser integration signifies an additional step into “making cryptocurrencies and Web 3.0. mainstream.”

Opera web browser integrated an anti-crypto jacking software into its web and mobile browsers late last year.

Last June, it was rumored that Robinhood, a popular brokerage and cryptocurrency trading application would offer native cryptocurrency wallet functionality.
