Just after the ban of the telegram which is an encrypted messenger in Friday, Roskomnadzor (RKN) a Russian telecommunications organization started the exercise of blocking the application from April 16.
For them to ensure that the messenger is completely banned, this organization has blocked around 20 million Amazon and google IP addresses by 17th April. However, the telegram users based in Russia have reported that the application works perfectly even when they don’t use the circumventing applications such as VPN and proxy.
However, even if the crypto-based messenger application go-to is still operational in Russia, the users of various services which don’t have any relation to telegram have made reports of crashes in the application which could be due to the blocked IP addresses. Additionally, Viber also started experiencing problems and affected the calls after the process of RKN began.
Edward Snowden who is the world’s renowned advocate of anonymity and user data security expressed his views on 17th April in a tweet and said that the move technically and morally ignores censorship effort and this move broke Russia’s internet.
In accordance with the views of the local news outlets mediazona and Tjournal, the users have made reports of the crashes in various services linked to the internet such as the windows and Microsoft updates; PlayStation networks, Battle.net, online gaming Wargaming, APK Mirror which is an android app, Xbox Live, streaming of content in Netflix and also Twitch.tv and various online retailers among many other complains.
Additionally, according to the local media, they reported that the blocking activity also affected the RKNs website. However, RKN has denied getting involved in network crashes.
Businesses and online services might incur losses because of the crash made by RKN. An organization like Skyeng online school call lose up to $480,000 in just one evening because of failures in networks. According to Meduza, a local news outlet, around 60 local organizations require legal assistance due to the matter.
According to Aleksandra Zharov, the RKN organization has successfully blocked around 30% of the telegram networks, and the complaints are low. Additionally, the RKN issued a warning to the VPN and proxy users of the ban.
However, the creator of Telegram, Pavel Durov said that he would give donations in the form of Bitcoin to the VPN and proxy administrators in support of the resistance. He declared that he would donate millions in the quest to protect digital freedoms.
